An Holistic Approach to Beating Cancer With Nutrition


Although nutrition is an important part in beating cancer, there are other factors that should be included in an holistic approach to cancer recovery.  The most important of these is removing emotional stress. [See The Cancer Personality].

Wrong foods place an enormous amount of stress on the body’s cells, causing normal body cells to become acidic, high in sugar, and cancerous during the dividing process.  It is important to adopt an alkaline diet filled with raw fruits and vegetables, and to avoid white flour, sugar, meat and dairy products. 


The importance of Re-Alkalising the Body



Nobel Prize winner Dr. Otto Warburg discovered that cancer cells only thrive in a low-oxygen state.  When your body cells and tissue are ACIDIC (below pH of 6.5 - 7.0), they lose their ability to exchange oxygen, and cancer cells are able to thrive.

On the other hand, when your body cells and tissue are ALKALINE (above pH of 7.0) cancer cells find it difficult to survive because of the high amount of oxygen present.  Alkaline tissue holds 20 times more oxygen than does acidic tissue and this oxygen rich environment prevents further cancer cell growth. In a pH of 8.0 or greater, cancer cells and cancer-causing pathogenic microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungus) cannot survive.


Maintaining proper body cell and tissue pH is critical for staying healthy and creating an inhospitable environment for cancer cells and virus-bacteria-fungus to multiply. Most people are born into this world with a pH near or at (neutral pH). If you can keep your body tissue pH somewhere between 6.5 - 7.0 it is very difficult to get sick. A near neutral pH (bright blue range) is the goal.

HOW DID MY BODY BECOME ACIDIC?

Nearly all those with cancer have high acidity.  There are two main reasons for a high acidic body environment.  

The first and most significant is prolonged stress.  This causes a depletion of adrenaline in the body’s cells.  It is the job of adrenaline to remove / utilize glucose (sugar) from the body’s cells for energy for the body.  Depleted adrenaline results in a build up of glucose (sugar) in the body’s cells, and restricts oxygen to cells, causing a break in the krebs cycle of the cell and cell mutation.  Pathogenic (harmful) microbes (virus, bacteria, fungus) inhabit cancer cells and feed on this glucose causing fermentation.  The body becomes acidic (low pH) due to the waste by-products of these pathogenic microbes fermentating glucose in cancer cells and also fermentation of stress hormones.

The second is poor nutrition / diet.  Every food has a pH value from very acidic to very alkaline.  Raw fruits and vegetables are very alkaline, while poor foods, beer, soda, coffee, etc are very acidic.  This is why those who eat certain types of foods are more or less at risk of certain types of cancers.  

HOW CAN I MAKE MY BODY ALKALINE AND KEEP IT THAT WAY?

Step 1 of 3:  Re-Alkalising The Body Quickly

A cancer patient always suffers from over-acidification of the tissues.  In order to deprive the tumour of a favourable environment, the tissue-pH value must be changed from acid to alkaline.  This is easier said than done because all alkaline-forming nutrition loses its intended effect soon after entering the bloodstream, as it is used up in the blood for buffering, before it can reach the tissue.  The organism (body) always endeavours via appropriate regulating mechanisms to maintain the blood-pH value at around 7.4, which is absolutely essential for the stability of hormones, in particular adrenaline.  A brief recapitulation of the law of reversed proportionality of pH value changes in blood and tissue: if the blood-pH value drops, the tissue-pH value rises (and vice versa).  This gives us a kind of lever: it should be possible to indirectly raise an unhealthy acid-tissue-pH value by lowering the slightly alkaline blood-pH value.

Over-acidification of tissue is prevented in a healthy organism (body) by the dextrorotatory lactic acid that is constantly produced by movement and suitable nutrition. This, therefore, indicates that an input of optically dextrorotatory lactic acid is needed.  This may seem like a contradiction to the layman, in that tissue is to be de-acidified by administering an acid.  The paradox disappears, however, if all interrelations are kept in mind.

Acidification of the blood by means of dextrorotatory lactic acid lowers the blood-pH value until it and the tissue-pH value reach the same level.  This takes precisely five weeks in cancer patients who are administered an appropriate dose of dextrorotatory lactic acid (thirty drops, three times daily).  This has been confirmed time and again by my own measurements over many years of the blood-pH value.

During the period from the first until approximately the fourth day in week 6, the acid substances will be discharged from the tissue into the blood, the pH value of which drops for a short time to very low values.  The excretion of the pathological substances of the tissue via blood, liver, kidneys, and skin during this period is apparent from an entirely pungent and acid smell.

I am as yet unable to explain the reasons for the period of five weeks.  However, the same physical and psychological symptoms occur after this (five week period).  Feeling generally unwell, the patient is irritable, aggressive, and depressed at the same time.  At the height of this “changeover reaction”, usually lasting for three days, the pH value of tissue and blood reach the same level.

The continued supply of dextrorotatory lactic acid finally ensures an unproblematic and physiological restitution and maintenance of a blood-pH value of 7.4 and a tissue –pH value above that figure.  This will remove a critical precondition for continued growth of a tumour in a cancer patient, namely the acid environment.  Kidneys and liver are now capable of carrying out their full detoxification functions, thereby, laying the foundations for a safe removal of subsequently occurring disintegration products of a malignant tumour. 

Finally, dextrorotatory lactic acid also causes the biological neutralization of the toxic, levorotatory lactic acid of the tumour into a non-toxic, racemic form.  This is of utmost importance, as it removes the stimulus for an increase in the cell division rate.  Normalising the acid-alkali balance also stimulates adrenaline production and improves its effectiveness, an equally important precondition for a healthy (aerobic) metabolism.

The therapy here introduced offers relatively great advantages to patients, because, the “changeover” reaction over three days excepted, they are not subjected to any stress.  It is neither painful nor does it cause vomiting, loss of appetite, bleeding of the bladder, or other similar side effects that are well-known from aggressive therapies.



SELF-ADMINISTERING DEXTROROTATORY LACTIC ACID

Step 2 of 3:  Healing Acid-Causing Internal Stress


The body's pH becomes acidic (sick) as opposed to alkaline (healthy) primarily due to depleted adrenaline. Depleted adrenaline levels are primarily caused by prolonged internal stress, as a result of a strong negative emotional and mental reaction to a major stressful event or events in ones life.  [See The Cancer Personality.]


The resultant suppressed feelings of anger, hate, resentment, and grief that create a drain and eventual depletion of the adrenaline reserves, need to be expressed and permanently released, to prevent the body returning to a low adrenaline, acidic pH state.

Step 3 of 3:  Replacing Acid-Diet with Alkaline Diet

Nutrition is the third step in re-alkalising the body.  Stop consuming things that make acidity levels greater in the body. Cola soda pop is a 2.0! Coffee is a 4!  Most beer is somewhere between 2.5-4.2 depending on the brand. People that consume huge amounts of soda pop, coffee and/or beer are usually acidic and are magnets for most illnesses including cancer.
 
For this reason it is important to eat foods that are highly alkaline, and to also drink water that is highly alkaline. Foods are divided into those that are acidic producing and those that are alkaline producing.
IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE CANCER SURVIVOR TO EAT 80% OF ALKALINE FOODS (MINIMUM) AND 20% ONLY ACIDIC FOODS.  Lemons, Watermelon, Figs, and raw fruit and vegetables especially are very alkaline forming. Doing so, will dramatically increase your alkaline levels and create a very inhospitable environment for cancer cells to multiply.

A task force of the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative reviewed available laboratory research into six popular alternative therapies, including Essiac. The review discovered that each of the herbs in Essiac has been shown to trigger biological activity, defined as an effect on the structure or function of cells, tissues or organs. Burdock root injected into mice with transplanted tumours, for instance, appeared to inhibit the tumours. The review noted that much of the research was limited to individual herbs, which may not capture the true "synergistic interaction" of herbal blends.
"Burdock Root contains a proven anti-cancer compound called arctigenin, which has been shown in scientific studies to have marked anti-tumour activity." (G. Dombardi 1970: Journal of Chemotherapy).

In 1983, Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick, Chief of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, urged Canada's highest health officials to launch "a scientific clinical trial" of Essiac. In a letter to the Canadian Minister of Health and Welfare, Dr. Hendrick reported that eight of ten patients with surgically treated tumours of the central nervous system, after following an Essiac regimen, had "escaped from the conventional methods of therapy including both radiation and chemotherapy."
At the age of seventy, in 1959, Caisse (founder of Essiac Tea) was invited to the Brusch Medical Center in Massachusetts, where she treated terminal cancer patients and laboratory mice with Essiac under the supervision of eighteen doctors. After three months, Dr. Charles Brusch, eminent physician to the New England elite, and his research director, Dr. Charles McClure, concluded that Essiac "has been shown to cause a decided recession of the mass, and a definite change in cell formation" in mice. "Clinically, on patients suffering from pathologically proven cancer, it reduces pain and causes a recession in the growth; patients have gained weight and shown an improvement in their general health.... Remarkably beneficial results were obtained even on those cases at the 'end of the road' where it proved to prolong life and the quality of that life."
Experiments on burdock have shown it to inhibit tumours and destroy fungal and bacteria cultures. Hungarian scientists at the University of Sveged reported "considerable anti-tumour activity" in a purified fraction of burdock. Japanese researchers at Nagoya University found in burdock a substance that is uniquely capable of reducing (cancer) cell mutation in either the absence or the presence of metabolic activation. This new property is so important the Japanese scientists named it the B-factor for "burdock factor."

Cancer Nutrition Therapy

A team of researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has shown that red beetroot pigments boost levels of proteins, called phase II enzymes, that help detoxify potential cancer-causing substances and purge them from the body. [Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry]

"The health benefits of tomato products came to light when a Harvard study showed that risk of prostate cancer was a third lower in men who consumed more tomato products," says Steven Schwartz, Ph.D., Professor of Food Science and Nutrition at The Ohio State University. "Since then, new research has supported a link with tomato products and decreased risk of other cancers, including pancreatic cancer, lung and colorectal cancer."
Researchers have isolated a compound in carrots called falcarinol that may be largely responsible for their anti-cancer benefits. Rats fed either the compound falcarinol or raw carrots (containing falcarinol) in addition to their normal food had a one-third lower risk of developing colorectal cancer than rats not fed them. [Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry]
In 1997 the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute of Cancer Research jointly published an extensive, global review of the role of food and nutrition in the prevention of cancer. The WCRF/AICR panel ranked the evidence and found that "a high intake of vegetables and fruit decreased the risk of cancer."
According to William Castelli, MD, director of the Framingham Heart Study, vegetarians live three to six years longer than meat eaters. He said, "vegetarians have the best diet. They have the lowest rate of coronary disease of any group in the country and they have a fraction of our heart attack rate and they have only 40% of our cancer rate."
Natural Killer cells are the most powerful infection fighting cells in the white blood cell arsenal. NK cells kill cancer cells, viruses, fungus and bacteria. A study published in the German Medical Journal "Deutsche Zeitshrift" reports on the results of 7 patients taking 5 grams of garlic daily. They said that "6 of the 7 patients had normal NK cell activity after 6 weeks and that all had normal NK activity after 12 weeks."
Young women who eat a lot of red meat and full-fat dairy products such as cheese, ice cream and butter appear to be raising their risk of breast cancer, the largest study of its kind has found. "When we compared the women in the highest fat intake group with women in the lowest intake group, those with the highest intake had a 33% greater risk of invasive breast cancer," said Dr Eunyoung Cho. The Importance of Oral Hygiene
for those Living with Cancer



It is important to maintain healthy teeth and gums when you
have cancer or a depressed immune system, to prevent bacteria,
viruses and germs entering your bloodstream through broken
areas or sores in your mouth and gums that could result in
infection throughout your body – causing a further weakening of
your immune system.

Gum disease, such as gingivitis and trench mouth can cause
even more serious infections, especially during cancer treatment,
when the immune system is further weakened.  Any broken areas
or sores provide a doorway for germs, bacteria, viruses and
localized infection to enter the bloodstream.
   

Mouth sores, tender gums, and a sore throat often result from
radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or infection, so it is important
to take extra care with your teeth and gums during these times.
 

 


MAINTAINING YOUR TEETH & GUMS

Always brush your teeth with a soft brush, to prevent damaging
soft mouth tissue and creating more broken areas, and remember to floss.  Rinse with warm salt water after meals and before
bedtime to help heal broken areas, ulcers or sores in your mouth.
 
Rinse / Gargle with 2 drops of 100% Tea Tree Oil in a small
amount of water after you have brushed your teeth.
 

To avoid chemical exposure from general-use toothpaste, try
instead a natural fluoride toothpaste, such as Kingfisher Mint &
Lemon Toothpaste.  Also remember to get regular check ups from your dentist.




Dextrorotatory Lactic Acid, Whey
and The Budwig Diet

Spirulina - The Super Cancer Food


Spirulina is a blue-green alga that contains concentrations of
nutrients unlike any other single grain, herb, or plant. It has the essential fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), linoleic and
arachidonic acids; is virtually the only vegetarian source of vitamin B12
, which is (needed for healthy red blood cells; and contains significant amounts of iron, protein (60 to 70 percent), essential amino acids, the nucleic acids RNA and DNA, and chlorophyll. Spirulina is a naturally digestible food that helps to protect the immune system, reduce blood cholesterol levels, and boost the absorption of necessary minerals. 

 


In a 2002 Japanese study, 12 adult males were administered an
oral hot water extract of spirulina, and the number and activity of
their natural killer (NK) cells was measured before and after
treatment. (NK cells destroy tumor cells by binding to them and
delivering lethal chemicals that kill on contact.) At the study's end, there was a significant increase in the production and cancer-killing ability of these subjects' NK cells. When their NK cells were exposed to a bacterial product after treatment, production of interleukin-12 (IL-12), a measure of immune strength, was significantly increased in comparison to IL-12 production in NK cells without pre-exposure to spirulina.

There have also been studies in India showing that spirulina
reduces the number of tumors (called the "tumor burden") in
experimental animals with various types of cancer. In mice with
chemically induced stomach cancer, the tumor burden was reduced to half that of the control animals using high-dose spirulina treatment (500 mg/kg body weight). In skin cancer, the tumor burden was reduced to less than one quarter, even with low-dose treatment (250 mg/kg body weight).

"We found that nutrient-rich spirulina is a potent inducer of
interferon-gamma (13.6-fold increase) and a moderate stimulator of both interleukin-4 and interleukin-1beta (3.3-fold increase)," says Eric Gershwin, professor and chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Clinical Immunology at UC Davis. "Together, increases in these cytokines suggest that spirulina is a strong proponent for protecting against intracellular pathogens and parasites and can potentially increase the expression of agents that stimulate inflammation, which also helps to protect the body against infectious and potentially harmful micro-organisms."

In the body, the preferential increase in the production of
interferon-gamma over interleukin-4 would shift the immune
system towards mounting a cell-mediated immune response
instead of a humoral response.
A cell-mediated response includes the activation of T-cells and antibodies that work with macrophages, another type of immune system cell, to engulf invading micro-organisms and cancer cells in the body.




The Importance of Red Onions
(Sulphur) in the Cancer Diet




Sulphur is the principal chemical constituent in onions and
helps to detoxify the body and prevent the growth of cancer cells.
According to the National Cancer Institute “Allyl sulphur compounds, which occur naturally in garlic and onions (especially red onions), make cells vulnerable to the stress created by products of cell division. Because cancer cells divide very quickly, they generate more stressors than most normal cells. Thus, cancer cells are damaged by the presence of allyl sulphur compounds to a much greater extent than normal cells.

A recent study from the National Cancer Institute found that
individuals who ate the most allium vegetables (red onions,
scallions, garlic, chives and leeks) had a nearly 50 percent lower
cancer risk than those who ate the least. Some laboratory studies
have shown that the natural substances in these vegetables have
anti-tumor effects. Other studies link the vegetables with a lower
risk of cancer of the colon, stomach, prostate, esophagus, breast
and endometrium (lining of the uterus).

As well as sulphur, red onions are rich in quercetin.  In a Johns
Hopkins study, published in the August issue of Clinic Gastroenterology and Hepatology
, five patients with an inherited form of precancerous polyps in the lower bowel known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) were treated with regular doses of curcumin (the chemical found in turmeric) and quercetin,an antioxidant in red onions, over an average of six months. The average number of polyps dropped 60.4 percent, and the average size dropped by 50.9 percent.

It is important to note that sulphur, the key ingredient of red
onions, is the active component of many leading alternative
